Edward Dmytryk, Jahrgang 1908, zählt mit den über 50 Filmen, die er zwischen 1935 und 1975 in Hollywood und Europa drehte, zu den profiliertesten unter den heute noch lebenden Regie-Veteranen. Filmgeschichte schrieb er u.a. mit Werken wie der Chandler-Verfilmung Murder My Sweet (Mord, mein Liebling, 1944), dem engagierten Kriminalfilm Crossfire (Im Kreuzfeuer, 1947) und dem Bogart-Klassiker The Caine Mutiny (Die Caine war ihr Schicksal, 1953). Bekannt wurde Dmytryk auch als einer der "Hollywood Ten", die sich im Zuge der Kommunistenhatz zu Beginn der 50er Jahre vor dem McCarthy-Ausschuss zu verantworten hatten. Heute betätigt sich Dmytryk mit großem Erfolg als Autor von Lehrbüchern über sämtliche Aspekte des Flmemachens.

Kernstück dieser ersten Buchveröffentlichung über Edward Dmytryk ist eine komplette, vom Regisseur selbst kommentierte Filmografie. A Maysles Scrapbook: Photographs/Cinemagraphs/Documents is the first comprehensive monograph on the pioneer filmmaking team that set the standards of contemporary documentary filmmaking: their Grey Gardens (1976) has spawned several fashion collections, an award-winning Broadway musical and a soon-to-be-released feature film starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange; Gimme Shelter (1970), which captured the infamous and fatal Rolling Stones concert at Altamont, is often called the greatest documentary ever made on the American 1960s; and Salesman (1968) is widely credited as the first feature-length documentary to eliminate voice-over narration and the first to achieve wide theatrical distribution.
